The Cost of Overprotection: League of Legends and Life

You know I was watching professional League of Legends and realized that having something to protect can make you make bad macro decisions. Sometimes, it's better for a turret to be destroyed if one is just going to be wasting too much resources in defending it and keeping that virginity, when the game is so much more than just defending tier 1 towers.

I wonder if this applies to real life as well, perhaps to events, circumstances, and skills or such.
